Using Forensic Laboratory Products as an Aid to Teaching Science

Using physical activities to cater to different styles of learning

One of the simplest theories of learning is VARK (Visual/Aural/Reading/Kinaesthetic). As the name of each category suggests, learners who fall into each grouping favour certain ways of learning. For example, learners who favour an aural style of learning will find it much easier to absorb information that they have listened to.

The reason this is important is that there is no universal method which will cater to all students. Some students will learn by listening, others by watching, and others by doing. Therefore, experiments are a great way of engaging a variety of learners.

Undertaking activities such as analysing ‘crime scene’ evidence is an exciting way of demonstrating practical science, which helps to make facts and information memorable, increasing the chances of the students retaining the knowledge they have learned.
